April 2026: Planet-Scale Build/CI Stack at Google & Spec-driven Dev with Claude

Meetup: Waterford Tech Meetup

Thu, Apr 9, 2026 · 6:00 PM

Meetup – Thursday\, 9th April 2026 \| 7:00 PM Venue: Waterford Treasures Museum (X91 K10E) Join us for our next Tech Meetup at the Waterford Treasures Museum. The evening will feature engaging technical talks, networking, food and drinks, and spot prizes, with a focus on practical challenges shaping today’s technology landscape. Speaker 1: Dr Mícheál Ó Foghlú (Google) Mícheál spent six years in Munich leading engineering teams within Google’s Core Developer organisation, where he was responsible for Source, Build, and Coding Tools. He now lives in Waterford, having returned two years ago, and continues to work with a globally distributed team spanning New York, Waterloo (Canada), the San Francisco Bay Area, and Munich. Tech Talk: The Bitter and the Sweet of Running a Planet-Scale Build & CI Stack at Google This talk offers a deep dive into managing Google's planet-scale Build & CI stack. We'll explore the complexities of supporting over 100,000 monthly users and massive workloads, maintaining a 98% cache hit rate across diverse computing environments. Discover resource management strategies for doubling year-over-year growth, the application of the Pareto principle, and critical caching layers (local, remote, P2P). We'll cover output storage managing hundreds of petabytes daily through deduplication and compression, and trace a user's build journey from desktop to production. Gain insights into optimizing the build stack and maintaining a 24/7 service with a small SRE team through strategic planning, monitoring, and collaboration. Finally, we'll discuss availability risks, standardization, and the pros and cons of a monolithic Build & CI stack. Speaker 2: Ray Carroll (Red Hat) Ray Carroll is a Senior Principal Engineer in the Emerging Technology sector, working across multiple EU Horizon research projects in the area of Cloud-Edge and Multi-Cloud computing. Ray has a background in academic research, completing his PhD before moving to industry and taking up various roles, including Software Engineer, Research Architect, and Technical Architect. ... Tech Talk: Spec-driven Development with Claude: An experiment in 'roll your own' software In an era where large language models (LLMs) are rapidly changing the nature of programming, is code still the "source of truth"? This session explores the shift from manual coding to Spec-Driven Development using tools like Speck-kit and Claude. Through some real-world "experiments" in rolling your own software, we explore what future software delivery might look like, where specifications become executable implementations, and muse on what this means for software delivery going forward.
