Catherine Young Dance will run a programme of free West African and Afro-Brazilian dance classes in Galway each week for 4 weeks in May and June in the run up to their world music Céilí: Afro Dabke Ukraine at the Black Box Theatre on Sat 6 June. Céilí: Afro Dabke Ukraine is an uplifting, life-affirming event celebrating music and dance traditions from around the world including West African dance, Palestinian Dabke, Ukrainian dance, as well as the traditional Irish céilí dances – all energised by live music and in the lead up to it, Catherine Young Dance, supported by the Town Hall Theatre, Galway Dance and the Arts Council, will run African dance classes every Friday evening for 4 weeks from 15 May featuring teachers in the West African and Afro Brazilian traditions, all to live drumming! No experience needed, just a curiosity and openness to try something new, move and build community. Energised by live drumming, these uplifting and joyous dance classes with Catherine Young and Tatiana Santos will have you moving, smiling, sweating, and wanting more. Duration is 90 mins and the classes are open to all the community (18+). Admission is free; however booking is required – to book your place, visit tht.ie or call Town Hall Theatre 091569777 . Workshops take place on alternative weeks in the Black Box, Dyke Road and the Mick Lally Theatre, Druid Lane as follows: 7.30pm Fridays 15 & 29 May at Black Box Theatre and 7.30pm Fridays 22 May & 5 June at Mick Lally Theatre.
